In LA we pick up our hire car and make our way to Hollywood. We are staying just off Hollywood Boulevard so we are perfectly placed to enjoy all the faded glamour the next day. The Boulevard is packed with ropey lookalikes posing for tips. These guys do it all off their own bat, so there’s no quality control like there would be at somewhere like Disney and it’s very much a mixed bags. There’s a really good “Tom Cruise”, who likes to hang around away from the other lookalikes, just leaning nonchalantly on a wall, as if he wants people to just stumble across him and think he is the real Tom Cruise. Except that he’s wearing full Top Gun uniform, so that might be a bit of a giveaway.
We go to see The Avengers at Graumann’s Chinese Theatre, which disappointingly stars the Hulk and Iron Man instead of Steed and Emma Peel. Then we look at the famous handprints outside.
We also visit the enormous Griffith Park where we climb to the top of Mount Hollywood for views of the HOLLYWOOD sign and over LA.
Our whistle-stop tour of LA is concluded next morning with a trip to Venice Beach. We watch a bit of a skateboarding competition, paddle in the sea and eat free samples at the local farmers market. Then it’s off on the hot hot drive to Las Vegas.
