Tan Tan Tanuki

Everywhere we went in Kyoto, we kept seeing these statutes of little bear-like creatures with massive balls.  Well, you live and learn, as a quick bit of googling told us that this was a folkloric Tanuki, based on a real Japanese raccoon-like animal with disproportionately large testicles.  There’s apparently a Japanese nursery rhyme along the lines of “Tan, Tan, Tanuki, even though there is no wind, his balls sway from side to side.”  Despite our self-imposed rule of one souvenir per country, and they must be practical, Mr Beet couldn’t resist getting a Tanuki to call his own
